Two weeks ago now, a large coalition within Congress put forward the Equality Act. If passed, the legislation would amend current civil rights laws to include “sexual orientation and gender identity” in their lists of protected groups. These small additions would make a massive difference. It would in many cases become illegal to distinguish between men and women.
Spaces carved out for the benefit and flourishing of women could suddenly disappear as biological males who “identify” as females gain access. This includes women’s sports teams, battered women’s shelters, women’s locker rooms and restrooms, various clubs and organizations established for women, and even women’s prisons.
All of these women-only institutions exist not to discriminate against anyone, but rather to recognize a natural, God-given difference between men and women. “Male and female he created them,” is fundamental to creation (Genesis 1:27). In his goodness and wisdom, God chose to create two equal yet distinct sexes among human beings. To deny this difference, as the Equality Act seeks to do, is to deny reality. You can deny reality for a short time, but eventually a house with no foundation will collapse.
God, we ask that you would make us into a people who are eager to submit to your divinely revealed truth in Scripture. As we do this, help us also to see the tremendous wisdom in how you crafted your creation. As men and women with distinct yet complimentary purposes, let us pursue these full of faith and joy, for your glory. May the church embody a compelling picture of your design to our culture, drawing them nearer to Jesus Christ.
