In a special issue looking ahead to 2019, the Economist magazine had a concerning article titled, “A slippery slope towards designer babies?” They explain how researchers can now map the DNA of parents and embryos with increasing accuracy. With this knowledge, they can determine whether a child will be at high risk for diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and various other maladies. The Economist then supposes that wealthy parents, even those without any fertility issues, may now choose to do in vitro fertilization as an elective procedure. This would allow them to decide whether or not to implant fertilized embryos, depending on the child’s DNA risk score.
Christians must wake up. Rapid technological developments in fertility are presenting us with possibilities unimagined in human history, possibilities which strike at the heart of what it means to be pro-life. Some modern parents and doctors believe we should discard human lives if they do not meet our standards. This is an ethic befitting Adolf Hitler. It is a maniacal attempt to play God. Medical research should help the sick and hurting, not end a life before it begins.
God, we ask that you would be at work in our culture to expose the ways that we have departed from your truth. We want to be a people who believe in our hearts and embody in our practice the truth that every human life is inherently precious in your sight. Make your church a safe haven for the sick, the diseased, and all those who are unwanted by our society, so that we can provide for them and show them the love of Jesus Christ.
