Every year thousands upon thousands of high school seniors eagerly await admission to the country’s most selective universities. But the enterprising William Singer found a way to turn a 5% chance to get into Yale or Stanford into a 100% guarantee. Through well-placed bribes and a network of shell organizations, Singer helped dozens of parents pay to get their children into top colleges. The scheme sometimes involved the coordination of athletic coaches and administrators, who pretended that students were star athletes in sports they did not even play in order to sidestep the usual admissions requirements.
But as always happens, eventually the truth came out and the law caught up. Now Singer is facing severe penalties, and the parents who financed the bribery—including some big names from Hollywood and Wall Street—may end up in jail themselves. The Bible warns against schemes like this: “The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death” (Proverbs 21:6). The dishonest route leads only to humiliation and destruction. Honesty and hard work are the way to go.
God, we ask that you would turn us into a people marked by integrity. May we be willing to miss out on opportunities if we can’t get them in an honest way. Instead, instill within each of us a capacity for hard work and the diligence to follow through day after day in our responsibilities. Remind us that in the end, this is what brings glory to our Lord Jesus Christ.
