Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.
—Psalm 119:89

Are you aware of how quickly the attitude toward homosexuality changed in our culture? I could give you statistics about how many more people embrace homosexuality today than a few decades ago. But I think the most vivid evidence of the change in our society comes from a quote I read about the abnormality of homosexuality. “Homosexuality represents a misuse of the sexual faculty and … of ‘human construction.’ It is a pathetic little second-rate substitute for reality, a pitiable flight from life. As such it deserves fairness, compassion, understanding and, when possible, treatment. But it deserves no encouragement, no glamorization, no rationalization, no fake status as minority martyrdom, no sophistry about simple differences in taste–and, above all, no pretense that it is anything but a pernicious sickness.” Those words came from “Time” magazine in January 1966. Now can you imagine the outrage if “Time” magazine today published an article in which it called homosexuality pathetic, pitiable, and a pernicious sickness?

As late as 1972, the American Psychiatric Association categorized homosexuality as a disorder deserving psychiatric treatment. But then the American Psychiatric Association changed their designation of homosexuality and referred to it as a condition like being left-handed. Now what caused them to change? Has there been some great new scientific discovery about homosexuality? Not at all. The reason the American Psychiatric Association changed their designation was because of the influence of the pro-homosexual lobby. Today it is no longer homosexuals who need therapy but those who speak out against it.

By the way, attitudes toward homosexuality are changing not just among the world at large, but among Christians as well. Many Christians are embracing homosexuality as a viable alternative lifestyle. Culture may change, but the Word of God never changes.

Today’s devotion is excerpted from “Why Gay Is Not Okay” by Dr. Robert Jeffress, 2008.
