Remember the childhood saying: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me? What a lie! Words wound. Yet finding effective ways to stop abuse has challenged people for centuries. Reasonable-sounding strategies saying “give up and give in... pursue peace at any price” usually backfires and makes the problem worse. Notice that Jesus did not model for us “peace at any price.” When compared to physical abuse, the impact of verbal and emotional abuse is minimized. However, the unseen harm of verbal and emotional abuse is typically longer lasting than the visible harm of physical abuse. Abuse of any kind strikes at the very core of who we are: crushing our confidence and wearing away our sense of worth.
