“While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:6-7)

I was blessed to be raised by Christian parents who taught my younger brother and me the importance of keeping "Christ in Christmas." Each Christmas Day, before opening presents, we would gather around the Christmas tree, and my dad would read the Christmas story aloud from Luke 2. Once he finished, he would ask each person to share one 'new thing' that stood out to them about that year's reading of the Christmas story.

Still today, the tradition of reading the Christmas story before opening presents is an annual tradition at the Ford Family Christmas gathering. Even though our family Christmas now includes wives, kids, and cousins, my dad still gathers the extended Ford family around the Christmas Tree, reads the Christmas Story aloud and asks every family member: "What stood out to you this year about the Christmas Story?" What a blessing it is to hear family members share a new reflection year after year!

Want to keep Christ in your family's Christmas celebration? This year, try reading the Christmas Story aloud to your family and ask each family member to share what stood out to them about the story. While the story remains the same, the Lord loves to share new things with us as we grow in relationship with Him. You might be surprised at what you hear. Wishing you and your family a joyous and Merry Christmas.
