The word from heaven will come to us with dazzling light to shine upon those who live in darkness, near deaths shadow. And he will illuminate the path that leads to the way of peace. (Luke 1:79)

Because of this promise – life has light. For our family, this past year has been filled with moments in which we felt like we were ‘near deaths shadow’ – loss of a job, illnesses, loss of a relationship, and tragedy all vied for our affection and attention so that we stumble in darkness. I don’t know about you but, when things get dark, I try to make things happen in my own strength and power: go to the doctor, pray harder, call them one-more-time, buy a year’s worth of food, move to the country. The list is endless.

Yet, contained in this promise from the mouth of Zechariah the prophet are these words – “…He will illuminate the path that leads to the way of peace.” Did you feel it? When you read those words – did you sense the power of Jesus?

You see, because of His power you already have an illuminated path out of darkness. I know it might not look like it at this very moment but consider that the way to peace usually appears in a package that is uncommon. Consider the birth of Jesus – you know the story and no one would have ever imagined “that baby” was the Son of Man.

So, this Christmas season if you are tempted to believe that you can’t breakthrough the darkness and there is no way out, do this:

Speak these words: “…He will illuminate the path that leads to the way of peace.”

Stop and listen for His voice. See the uncommon as a path. Start upon that path to peace.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What was something from this past year in which you could "see darkness?"
  2. Do you still see it as darkness, or has Jesus illuminated a way to peace?
  3. Are you willing to Speak, Stop, See, and Start as the devotional recommended?
