“And she gave to her first born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the inn.” Luke 2:7

Very little peace and quiet and not having enough space is something our family experiences quite often when we come together. We have six in our family – two boys, two girls, and my parents. That has expanded to two daughters-in-law and two sons-in-law. Quickly that has grown to eight grandchildren. So in all there are eighteen just in our immediate family!

Before we all were married, my family took a trip to Frisco, Colorado. One of my clients offered to let us use their rent house at no charge. We forgot to ask one thing: the size of the rent house (one detail to never forget when planning a vacation). In all there were eight of us total – my brother, two sisters, my parents, one boyfriend, and a fiancé.

When we got to the house, we realized it was a two bedroom, two bath condo, and was less than 1,000 square feet. Eight people in a small space. What could possibly go wrong?

The sleeping situation was hysterical. Of course my parents got their own room. However, the other bedroom had two bunk beds, which left two people to sleep on the floor in the living room. I remember being in the same room with my brother and my sister’s fiancé. That night I didn’t sleep. I cannot describe to you how loud they snored. It sounded like two bears fighting over a den.

The next night for dinner my mom made a casserole and as she took it out of the oven the glass literally exploded. Not only that, but it had snowed nearly 20 inches and was negative 18 outside.

The trip was a mess, but ironically I loved every minute. This will forever be one of my favorite Christmas vacations we’ve ever taken. The intimate setting that eight people in a small condo provides, the laughter, the fights, and the experience will always remind me of how much I love my family and thank God for the time I get to spend with them.

Maybe your family story is different than mine, and that’s all right. One thing I know to be true — when we become a child of God, He becomes our family, friend, and most importantly our Savior and we are adopted into the family of Christ. That is something I am truly grateful for this Christmas season.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Talk to your family about your favorite Christmas vacation/moment that you’ve had. What made it so memorable?
  2. What can you do to make this Christmas just as memorable?
