Every day 8,000 people die in our country and tens of thousands die around the world. The majority of them die having rejected or neglected the most important gift of all – God's gift of forgiveness which comes through Jesus Christ.

Why do most people reject or neglect God's gift of salvation? And what are the consequences of rejecting that gift? Hebrews 2:3-4 says: “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard. God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.”

What is so "great" about the salvation Christ offers?

1. It is without cost.

In Hebrews 1:14, the writer talks about those who inherit salvation. I don't earn it, I receive it as an undeserved gift from God. Revelation 22:17 invites those who wish to drink of the water of life to do so without cost: “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.”

2. It is without condition.

There are no strings attached to God's gift of salvation. It is a gift that can never be revoked by God or lost by us. Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” And John 10:28 says, “And I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.

3. It is without constraint.

There is no limitation to the kind of sin God can forgive. Colossians 2:13 tells us that he has forgiven us of ALL our transgressions, not some of our transgressions. “And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions.”

In his book The Grip of Grace, Max Lucado asks, "You know what bothers me most about convicted murderer Jeffrey Dahmer, the man responsible for murdering, dismembering, cannibalizing dozens of men; the man who kept human heads in his refrigerator and hoarded human hearts for himself?

The thing that bugs me most about Jeffrey Dahmer is not his heinous acts, but his salvation. While in prison, before he was murdered by an inmate, Dahmer trusted in Christ as his Savior and immediately had his sins forgiven and is now in the same heaven that you and I will one day enjoy. That is a tribute, not to the greatness of Dahmer, but to the goodness of God who offers you so much grace that it covers the most vile of all sins.”

Let me ask you a question: How do you plan on escaping God’s inevitable judgment if you reject or neglect so great a salvation?

A salvation that is offered without cost, without condition, and without constraint?

How are you planning to escape God’s certain and severe judgment?
