“I told them how the hand of my God had been favorable to me and also about the king's words which he had spoken to me. Then they said, ‘Let us arise and build.’ So they put their hands to the good work.” - Nehemiah 2:18
God had given Nehemiah a God-sized mission and vision. As Nehemiah would soon learn, when the Lord gives the vision, He also provides the provision.
Nehemiah was no ordinary servant. He was cupbearer to the King of Persia. This position, normally reserved for sons of rival princes, was given to a Jewish man who found supernatural favor with the king. God had given Nehemiah the vision to rebuild the walls of the city and restore the temple. Great was the destruction, but even greater was the work to be done. God not only provided the men, but the means as well. Through the favor and provision of the king, Nehemiah had all he needed to accomplish the task the Lord has called him to. He even was granted lumber from the king’s personal forest.
God also provided the people to do the work under the leadership of Nehemiah. Section by section, each family, from the high priest to the simple farmer, had a vital role to play. When the critics and enemies threatened the work, people were appointed to stand in the gap and defend those who were working. In the end, the walls, gates, towers and temple were rebuilt. Worship of the one true God was consecrated and celebrated in the temple once more. As only God could have orchestrated, God gave abundant provision to Nehemiah. Our God is truly the Provider.
