If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11)
When I was about 12 years old, I remember wanting the newest video game console for Christmas. I told my parents about it, just hoping that maybe they would get it for me. When I asked, I remember them telling me that it was too expensive and to not get my hopes up.
That same day I went to get the vacuum from the closet to do my chores, and there it was tucked in the corner almost completely covered with a blanket – the exact video game console that I just asked for. I had to pretend like I didn’t see it, but once Christmas rolled around, I saw the box and I knew that my parents got me the exact gift that I wanted.
Years later, I told my parents about how I knew they got it for me and how I found it. What I didn’t know was that they were thinking about returning it and getting me something else. It wasn’t until I asked for it that they knew they already bought the perfect gift.
It reminded me of God and His goodness and how much more He knows exactly what is right for us. Yet, He wants us to ask Him for it. He wants to have a relationship with us. My dad got me an incredible gift that year because I asked. How much more God, our Heavenly Father, gives good gifts to use for those of us that ask.
- Why does God tell us to ask Him for things even though He already knows exactly what we want and need?
- Have you ever wanted something and didn't receive it because you didn't ask for it?
- What is the greatest gift that we can give someone on this earth?
