“And David said, ‘The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.’ And Saul said to David, ‘Go, and may the Lord be with you.’” - 1 Samuel 17:37
King Saul and his generals had lost sight of the most important fact that God wanted to give them victory. All they could see was the enemy encamped across the valley and their giant champion. Yet God used a young shepherd boy to embolden the Israelites. Through David, God gave Israel victory that day. It wasn't because David was a skilled warrior, but rather because David shared his testimony of how the Lord had delivered him from the lion and the bear that prompted Saul to give David a chance.
We all have Goliath's that we face in our lives. Sometimes the most encouraging thing that we can experience is the life-affirming testimony of someone else who has been there and who has seen the Lord give them victory. We are all called to steward over our testimony. In doing so we, like David, can provide encouragement to others that the Lord can give victory to in the battle. Whatever the circumstances, we all have battles that we need to lay at the feet of Jesus and trust Him to provide the victory.
David did not slay Goliath in his own strength, and we don’t have to try and face our own giants of life alone either. Just as the Lord was with David, so too is He is an ever-present help in our time of need. As the hymn, Victory in Jesus, says, we have “victory in Jesus, our Savior forever, He sought us and bought us with His redeeming blood, He loves us ere we knew Him, and all our love is due Him.”
