“I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one's lifetime; moreover, that every man who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor - it is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear Him.” - Ecclesiastes 3:12-14
Time is a precious commodity. It is the one gift we can never get back. The fool fails to realize just how important time is as a resource. Ecclesiastes reminds us that time is one element that we are called to diligently steward over. The third chapter of Ecclesiastes famously says, “There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.” God, who is not confined by time, sees all that has been and will be in our lives. Yet, we are challenged to make the most of the 24 hours we are given. We are to work diligently, not like the fool, because the time allowed to us is truly a gift from God.
The preacher writes, “Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat, to drink and enjoy oneself in all one's labor in which he toils under the sun during the few years of his life which God has given him; for this is his reward…this is the gift of God. For he will not often consider the years of his life, because God keeps him occupied with the gladness of his heart” (Eccl. 5:18-20).
Consider carving out some time to use the gifts that God has given you to serve Him in the life of your local church - teach a class, sing in the choir, greet or usher. You and your gifts are needed in the service of the Lord!
