“Surely my soul remembers and is bowed down within me. This I recall to my mind; Therefore I have hope. The Lord's loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I have hope in Him.’" - Lamentations 3:20-24
At the age of 27, Thomas Chisholm accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was called into the ministry at 36, but poor health caused him to quit only a short year later, at the age of 37. Working the rest of his life as a life insurance agent, he still wrote more than 1,200 poems from his desk. In 1925 he wrote about the gift of God’s presence in Great is Thy Faithfulness:
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Great is Thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!
Even in one of the darkest moments in Israel’s history, God gave them the gift of His presence. We too can take comfort in the gift of God’s presence. Like Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome, we too can be “convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38–39).
