To understand biblical generosity, we must first understand the source of generosity itself. Generosity is not just a gift of God; it is one of His strongest defining attributes.
In every book of the Bible, we see the giving nature of God fleshed out. Simply put: our God is a generous Father! God has freely given us the gift of redemption, restoration, and reunification through Christ. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are the benefactors of His amazing generosity. In looking at the Trinity we also see how generous God is:
- God gave the world His Son: John 3:16
- Jesus gave up His own life sacrificially: John 10:18
- The Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts: 1 Corinthians 12
When we focus on God’s generosity, it inspires us to live as generous disciples. The truth is, everything we have is from God. As believers, we are called to a complete surrender of our whole heart to Christ. However, oftentimes we fail to realize that this means we must also surrender all our resources to His Lordship. They are HIS resources, entrusted to us for a purpose. We need to have a heart-change on giving and a refocus on how we see the role of biblical stewardship in our lives and in the life of the church. To a lost and hurting world, our generosity serves as an outward expression of our inner relationship with Jesus Christ.
What if we began to see generosity as an opportunity more than an obligation? What kind of impact could we make for the kingdom if we lived as surrendered stewards and generous disciples? That’s our calling as we live lives of generosity that are truly built on the Bible.
