“He did right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done. For he clung to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses.” - 2 Kings 18:3,6
At 25 years old, Hezekiah had seen the near destruction of his kinsman in Israel. Willful disobedience by the nation and its leaders had wreaked havoc on Israel and Judah. But God was faithful to not give up on the remnant who were still faithful to Him. Hezekiah lived in a world that no longer valued God and His Word. He was educated in the law. When he became king, he obeyed the instructions of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the nation of Israel was carried away into exile as just punishment for their transgressions, the young king prospered wherever he went because the Lord was with him.
Like any father, God will always discipline those He loves. Like Israel and Judah, we often learn life lessons the hard way. But we don’t have to. God has given us instructions for living the life He wants us to live in the Bible. When we obey Him, blessings flow as a result.
God had given His people numerous instructions through His prophets during the time of 2 Kings. The prophets, Amos and Hosea, were commissioned to Israel, while Isaiah, Joel, Micah, Nahum, Habbakuk, Zephaniah, and Jeremiah were sent to prophesy to Judah. God has given us instruction through the Bible today. What an amazing gift His Word truly is to us. The Bible is God’s generous gift of instruction left for us so that we may know how to love Him, serve Him, and know Him personally through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
