1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 describe the characteristics of a wise man, God’s man. They tell of a man worthy of leading and worth following. He is a testament to a strong, good God. And several specific characteristics define him:

• He is known for being blameless, not marked by a perpetual struggle with a specific sin (1 Timothy 3:2)
• He is known for purity in his life (1 Timothy 3:2).
• He is clear-headed and disciplined (1 Timothy 3:2).
• He is a lover of people and can appropriately give an account for the hope that is in him (1 Timothy 3:2 & 1 Peter 3:15).
• He is a man of peace and is known for his generosity (1 Timothy 3:3).
• He is a leader in his household, which is an indicator of how he will lead in other areas of his life (1 Timothy 3:4-5).
• He is spiritually mature and humble (1 Timothy 3:6).
• He is a man of good reputation, even with those who disagree with his beliefs (1 Timothy 3:7).
• He is steadfast in his faith, holy, just, and self-controlled (Titus 1:9).
• He is able to encourage and admonish because he knows the Word of God (Titus 1:9).

This kind of man is a product of time with Jesus and growth in wisdom over time. He is not made overnight, nor will you be. The 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 man is simply the man who has chosen to lead by walking in submission to Christ. That submission radically transforms every area of his life and points others to a strong and loving Father.
