"But who am I and who are my people that we should be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given You. For we are sojourners before You, and tenants, as all our fathers were…it is from Your hand, and all is Yours.” - 1 Chronicles 29:14-16

David and the people of Israel had a seemingly impossible mission before them: building a temple that would be a home for the presence of God on earth. The building list was enormous and the building was to be a testament not to David, but to God’s faithfulness and His provision. David led in making the offering of precious materials needed to build. He knew that he could not expect the leaders of Israel to go where he was not willing to also go, or give as sacrificially as he was willing to.

The response to David’s giving was a tremendous outpouring of resources the likes of which they had never seen before.  It must have been so exciting to see all that had been provided. But the hearts of David and the people were not one of pride, but of joy. Everything they had belonged to the Lord. They lived lives as surrendered stewards and generous disciples. David prayed “Since I know, O my God, that You try the heart and delight in uprightness, I, in the integrity of my heart, have willingly offered all these things; so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You” (1 Chronicles 29:17).

When we give, do we give joyfully knowing that it is God who provides? If you have committed to give to the work of the Lord, view it as an opportunity to be a part of God’s faithful provision, and not just fulfilling a religious obligation..
