“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Every day, we ask difficult questions that impact long term direction. And too often the path feels unclear. But the Lord has given us a road map when the questions weigh heavy. He is faithful to direct us when we obediently seek His way and follow.

1. Trust the Lord with all your heart.

Discerning the right path begins with trusting the Lord with our whole being. In fact, before we make any big life changes or even in the small moments and decisions of our day, we must begin here – trust that God sees, knows, and has made a way for whatever comes next.

2. Do not trust your own knowledge.

Proverbs 12:15 tells us that following our own way is foolish but the wise listen to counsel. When the path isn’t clear, we seek the Lord. We identify truth found in God’s Word that may help narrow our options. And we seek wise counsel from other believers who are also students of God’s Word. Proverbs 14:12 says that there is a way that seems right to man but can lead to death. We want to follow the path that is right to God, even if it doesn’t make sense to our human understanding.

3. Look to Him for every step.

Sometimes, the path is so cluttered, we have to seek the Lord before we take each step. Thankfully, we serve a God who wants to direct us in the way we should go for His glory, our good, and the good of others. In Joshua 1:8, God gave the Israelites a promise that He would give them every place they set their feet. And He promised to be with them. We can trust that He wants to give us victory as we follow Him, and He will be with us every step of the way.

When the path isn’t clear, wait, trust, and anticipate what God will do. God is a God of clarity, not confusion. If the way is clouded, wait for the next step. When it’s time, the Lord will show you the way you should go. He is faithful to direct us. Our job is to be ready to obey when He clears the path.
