The mark of a wise man is a common thread that weaves through Scripture, and the characteristics that define this person fly in the face of cultural actions and standards. According to the dictionary, the word “wise” means to “have the power of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right; possessing discernment, judgment, or discretion.” Despite culture’s attempts to soften what is true and right, Jesus says our compass for wisdom points due north to Him. When we are pursuing Him with our heart, soul, mind, and strength, we discover the source of wisdom and become people marked by wisdom. Scripture even defines characteristics of a wise person for us:

  • They ask God for wisdom, knowing He is the source. (James 1:5)
  • They listen to godly advice and accept discipline when in the midst of sin. (Proverbs 19:20)
  • They guard their lips, knowing they are a wellspring and can bring harm or healing. (Proverbs 13:3)
  • They practice humility no matter the circumstances. (Proverbs 11:2)
  • They number their days, understanding that the goal is to live for eternity. (Psalm 90:12)
  • They bring calm, not chaos when life is uncertain. (Proverbs 29:11)
  • Their character is marked by peace, purity, consideration, submissiveness, mercy, impartiality, and sincerity. (James 3:17)
  • Their conduct is above reproach. (James 3:13)
  • They love life and prosper because wisdom is precious to them. (Proverbs 19:8)
  • They hear wisdom and put it into practice. It influences how they live and respond daily. (Matthew 7:24)
  • They are people who fear the Lord and hold Him and His Word and ways in highest esteem. (Proverbs 15:33)
  • They walk with others who are wise, because in doing so they grow even more in wisdom. (Proverbs 13:20)
  • They live in praise of who God is, His gift of wisdom, and how He hears and guides those who walk in relationship with Him. (Daniel 2:23)

A wise person is one whom others are drawn to because they exude Christ. They are often elevated in their workplace, home, and community as someone worth following and modeling. This kind of wise living can be a catalyst that allows for conversations that point to the goodness of God. As we grow in wisdom, we become people who spur others on to grow in relationship and wisdom with God. That kind of lifestyle is worth pursuing.
