Throughout history, the church has been a tool to take the gospel to the rest of the world and further equip the saints for the ministry of the gospel. We’ve heard countless stories of how the generosity of a few impacted a people group or nation. The generosity of one man equipped the church in Myanmar to reach an entire generation for Christ. Through generous giving to Fuel the Fire and participation in the Easter Run, we are providing clean water to the people of Liberia. God does big things through generous hearts. Money and giving can be a touchy subject in church, but it doesn’t have to be. Our desire would be to encourage believers to live as surrendered stewards and generous disciples. God gives us excellent examples in scripture to emulate.

1. Generosity is a characteristic of our generous Father.

In every book of the Bible, we see the giving nature of God fleshed out. Simply put, our God is a generous Father! He gave us that which was most precious to Him – His Son (John 3:16). He gave sacrificially (John 10:17). And the Holy Spirit still gives generously to the believer in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11)

2. Biblical generosity is not measured by transactions but by transformation.

Biblical generosity is centered around the command and call of stewardship. Stewardship is the conducting, supervising, or managing of something, specifically something entrusted to one’s care. From scripture, we know that God owns it all. Everything we have and are is from Him, and we have the responsibility to steward it in a way that acknowledges that it doesn’t belong to us but has been entrusted to us to use wisely and multiply.

3. Biblical generosity becomes a contagious proclamation of the goodness of God in our lives.

How we demonstrate generosity is a testimony to others of our relationship with the Lord. We should give (Deut. 14:22) out of love, obedience, gratitude, and joy (2 Cor. 9). God is faithful to provide. We are called to be faithful in our stewardship and generosity.

Many emotions and circumstances can hold us back from giving, but when we see God as our provider who is out for our best, the good of others, and ultimately His glory, it frees us up to give with purpose and joy. We can trust Him with our circumstances, and we can trust Him with the results, even when we don’t see them this side of heaven. Are you willing to go on the generosity journey and follow where the Lord leads?  No reserves. No retreats. No regrets. Just faithful obedience. Let’s watch with anticipation what God will do as a result.
