“Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.” - Leviticus 26:11-13

In Hebrew, the name of the Book of Leviticus means “and He called.” Through the pages of this book, we see that God called for sacrifices, celebrations, feasts, and offerings. He called for the atonement of sins, the people to repent, and He called for blessings to fall upon the people if they would only remain faithful. God gave us celebrations so that we can remember and memorialize all that the Lord has done for us and what He will do for His people.

In Leviticus, God gave the instructions for the high Jewish holidays of Passover, the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. He also gave instructions for the celebration of the Sabbath, Sabbath years, and years of Jubilee. God gave us not only reasons to celebrate, but clear instructions to take time for celebrations!

In our modern world, we celebrate holidays and events like Christmas and Easter or birthdays and anniversaries, all of which remind us of just how amazing God’s blessings have been in our own lives. These celebrations can serve as a powerful reminder and illustration of the goodness of His mercy and the richness of His life when we live as obedient followers of Christ.
