“Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods…We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God.” - Joshua 24:16-18
The wandering and often wayward children of Israel had spent a generation on the threshold of the Promised Land. Barred entry as a result of a lack of faith, nevertheless, God did not go back on His promise to give them a land of their own. The key to walking into their inheritance was for the nation to repent of their ways and return to obedience to the Lord.
After a generation had passed in the wilderness, they were finally allowed to walk into the promised land. It was not going to be easy…many challenges and obstacles were waiting to be overcome. The victory was assured if only they would rest in full and complete surrender to God and obedience to His Word. Despite the never-ending cycle of disobedience, God’s continual love and faithfulness meant that He not only provided an inheritance for that specific generation, but the means to secure that inheritance for generations to come.
The Bible tells us that “the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. And the Lord gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hand” (Joshua 21:44-45). The Lord is still fulfilling the promised inheritance He made thousands of years ago.
As Christians, we are co-heirs with Christ of our eternal inheritance in Heaven. It is our great reward for those who are faithful to follow Christ!
