“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind…” Luke 10:27
One of the greatest responsibilities as an adult is to shepherd the children around you to an understanding and love of Jesus. Teaching them what it looks like to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, strength, and mind from an early age can make all the difference as they grow into adulthood. Before they can fully understand how to love the Lord with everything, they must first learn to accept the free gift Jesus offered through His death on the cross. So how do you have this conversation with the kids around you? Where do you start?
1. God created them.
Teach kids about the bigness of God, that He created the world, and created people because He desired a relationship with us. He created them uniquely and wants a relationship with them, too (Psalm 139:13-16). God loves them just as they are and desires to live in heaven with them forever.
2. God loves them and sent His Son.
Kids need to understand they are loved before they will understand how to trust. Remind children that God loved us so much, even in our sin and mistakes, He sent His Son to die and pay for our sins (John 3:16). Help kids understand the weight of this sacrifice so they understand just how much Jesus loves them and that nothing is too hard for Him nor can separate them from this love.
3. His sacrifice created a gift that is available for them to choose.
When kids understand that they are uniquely created for a purpose and loved to the point of death by a good God, they will hopefully be more willing to take a step in choosing the free gift of salvation. Once they confess with their mouth and believe in their heart that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10), then they need to know from you that their salvation is secure and their eternity is guaranteed.
When kids know “why” it is good and safe to trust Jesus, receiving His free gift of salvation is an easier step to take.
