"Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” - Numbers 20:8
Actions have consequences. For Moses and the Israelites, their continual lack of faith in the Lord—despite all that He had done—left them wandering in the wilderness for a generation. Despite the constant disappointment that the people of Israel caused by their lack of faith, God still bestowed upon them the gift of faithfulness.
From His presence—dwelling with them and covering the camp with a cloud—to providing healing from snake bites by instructing the bronze serpent to be created, God gave the gift of faithfulness despite the people’s disobedience. When they doubted God and Moses—when the people worried about the lack of water—God instructed Moses to speak to the rock. But Moses lacked the faith, and hit the rock instead.
Despite Moses’ disobedience, God still provided water for the good of the people. However, Moses’ lack of faith in the Lord had severe consequences. For his disbelief, he was not allowed to enter the Promised Land he had so longed to see. God did not break His Word with His people. They would eventually cross over the Jordan and claim the land that the Lord had intended for them from the days of their father, Abraham. Just like God was faithful to provide for Israel, He is also faithful to provide for us and meet our needs. He is faithful to provide, faithful to equip, and faithful to do all that He says He will do for us.
