“Many waters cannot quench love, Nor will rivers overflow it;

If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, It would be utterly despised.” - Song of Solomon 8:7

From the beginning of time, God has been blessing humanity with the gift of human intimacy and love. Beginning in the garden, God gave Adam more than a helpmate, God provided Adam with a wife and a friend who would accompany him throughout his life. Latin Church fathers gave the world a sense of a prudish God who only gave physical intimacy for the practical reason of procreation alone. However, in the Song of Solomon, we see physical intimacy in a completely different light.

The celebration of intimate love, when understood in light of Scripture, shows us that the gift of human intimacy is God’s wedding gift to us. It is beautiful, joyful, and something meant to be shared with our spouse. The bride and groom in the Song of Solomon relay in vivid detail the physical, emotional, and spiritual journey of married couples. As we grow closer to God, so too are we better equipped to grow closer with our spouse. We are meant to see each other as a precious gift from a generous God. The romance that is actively pursued in the confines of a biblical marriage should be one of mutual gratification and satisfaction.

The world tries to alter the image of intimacy to limit it to physical acts. But that is not what real love is all about. God’s Word tells us that true love is much more than physical. The intimate love God gives us through and for our spouse is multidimensional – physical, emotional, and spiritual.
